About Ammonite Fossils
Ammonites were sea creatures with a chambered shell, related to the present day nautilus. The animal lived in the end section of the shell. The chambers behind him were filled and emptied of water to control buoyancy. They became extinct around the end of the Cretaceous Period, about the same time that dinosaurs became extinct. When the Ammonite fossil is sliced in half, as in these specimens, the chambers are visible.
